Drone reveals young white sharks swimming within feet of the coast

It may be a new summer of the shark in Southern California after lifeguards spotted up to a dozen sharks, with a drone, swimming just feet from the shore.

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Seal beach lifeguard Joe Bailey was interviewed by CBS Los Angeles about what the drone captured.

"This morning, we launched it," he said. "Ten minutes later we knew there were 10 to 12 sharks all in the Surfside area."

The drone has been used by the lifeguards for over a month, but this is the first time such an event took place. Within the first few minutes the drone spotted several five and six foot great white juvenile sharks swimming close to shore.

The drone "works great," he continued. "It flies up about 100 feet, looks down a wide area, and when we see the shadows, we'll go down and focus in on them."

The Monday morning events documented sharks swimming in water that was only three or four feet deep, but no swimmers were in the ocean at the time.

"If we get bigger sharks or we get sharks that are aggressive, we're actually going to close the water. But right now, we have sharks that are 5- to 6-feet long, non-aggressive, acting like normal sharks, feeding on bottom fish, doing exactly what we would expect them to do," he said. "That's why we have it posted just to let people know that they are there."

If the drone sees that the sharks are acting aggressively or larger sharks, more prone to attack humans by mistaking them for seals, come closer to shore, then the beach will be closed. Until then swimmers can enjoy the water and the risk of swimming with sharks.
