Is the U.S. government out of gold

About 3 percent of the gold ever refined in the entire history of mankind sits in the vaults of the United States Bullion Depository in Fort Knox, equaling about 5,000 metric tons of gold.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - At least this is what the government of the United States says, and has maintained for decades. But in light of recent activities and revelations from NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden that the federal government routinely lies to the public, it is unclear if there is even any gold at all within the high-tech and heavily guarded vaults.

This Lent season, are you "Doing Good?"

One recent act by the government has many worried that this is the case. Former Congressman Ron Paul has been a skeptic of the government's claims for years, even back in 2011 he introduced legislation that would cause an audit of the gold reserve, though it did not pass.

The last time Fort Knox was audited was in 1953, immediately after President Eisenhower was inaugurated. However, no outside experts were allowed in during the audit, and only about 5% of the gold was actually tested.

Since this time, the U.S. has sold some of its gold, about 12,000 metric tons worth, and it is unclear if the government ever even did stop selling the gold reserve.

If the U.S. lied about spying on its own citizens and our allies, have they lied about how much gold is still possessed by the United States?

Some of the gold that's in Fort Knox may not even be owned by the government anyways. Gold is routinely loaned or leased by the central banks, but reports are not required to distinguish between gold that's owned and gold that is not.

Even the U.S. Treasury Department simply acknowledges that it holds "gold (including gold deposits and gold swapped)."

The gold in Fort Know may not even be gold; counterfeit bars of gold have turned up as painted tungsten. It has been reported that it would take 400 full-time workers over six months to test all the gold in Fort Knox and over $15 million to boot.

While this has been used by the government as an excuse to avoid an audit, it should make people curious as to what exactly the government wants to avoid.
