LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - ABC news reported that 14-year-old Josh McCoy, of Alexandria, earned every available merit badge over the past three years, maxing out the amount of badges he can obtain.
Help provide kids with the quality learning tools they need.
"I think it's worth it," he said during an interview with a local ABC affiliate. "You learn a lot of skills. ...I have a good sense of what I want to do. Engineering."
McCoy revealed that he did not intend to earn all the badges initially, at first he just wanted to beat his father's record, who earned 82 badges while he was in the scouts.
"I'm a very competitive person," the member of Troop 1145 said. "After that, there was so many left to do so I wanted to keep going and then (I) wanted to just finish them. . Not many people do it."
The amount of badges McCoy earned would not fit on the regular sash, so his mother had to sew two together for him.
McCoy suggested that perhaps sewing could be another potential merit badge.
Some of the badges did not take long, but others were much harder. He revealed that it took two years for him to learn the 15 songs necessary for the bugle badge. Backpacking 70 miles also required four trips.
"When I was starting I was getting about five a month," he said. "Then it started to slow down. When there's less to earn, you can't earn as much."
