USPS plans to partner with retailers to deliver groceries

The U.S. Postal Service has revealed a new plan to reverse its six-year streak of billion-dollar losses, which is as ingenious as it is simple.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The USPS wants to deliver your groceries to you, and the agency sent this proposal to the Postal Regulatory Commission, seeking the panel's permission to begin testing the program on a wider scale on October 24. This larger trial is set to last two years, but could become a permanent program sooner than that.

The USPS will work with retail partners to deliver groceries to homes between 3-7 a.m. so long as costumers have dropped off their orders between 1:30-2:30 a.m.

"Ultimately, the Postal Service expects this will generate more package deliveries that do not currently move within the postal system," the agency said. "Grocery deliveries are expanding across the nation, with several different types of companies beginning to offer this service in recent months."

The USPS did not specify what the delivery prices would be, or which retailers and cities the program would include.

The USPS has already performed this service in the San Francisco Bay area for Amazon.com as part of the internet retailer's Amazon Fresh service. The USPS says it averaged 160 deliveries per day on that program, extending the service to nearly 40 postal areas.

Back in November of 2013, the USPS partnered with Amazon, which allows the online giant to ship packages on Sundays at regular rates. Usually, the USPS charges extra for Sunday deliveries and it is unclear if this will be extended to other retailers on the program.
