1,000 Texas National Guard deployed to secure U.S.-Mexico border

In an effort to stem the influx of tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children that have been entering the United States illegally in 2014, Texas Governor Rick Perry will send 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to help secure the southern border.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Perry will also call on President Barack Obama and Congress to hire an additional 3,000 border patrol agents for the Texas border, aimed at replacing the temporary guard forces situated there, an aid from Perry's office reported. The aid also reported that Perry will make an official announcement on Jul 21 in Austin.

Be a light in the darkness, end world hunger through "prayer and action."

Texas has received most of the unaccompanied illegal minors, especially in the Rio Grande region, and repeated calls for aid from the federal government have been ignored.

"The people of Texas epect us, and I think people of this country expect us, to secure the border. And we will," he said in an interview with a CNN affiliate on July 20.

The Rio Grande region of Texas is where most of these immigrant children are crossing, and then turning themselves in to the border patrol. The region has 3,000 border patrol agents covering 320 miles of land and 250 miles of water, which equates to about 5 agents per mile.

Perry has been outspoken in his desire to secure the U.S.-Mexican border in Texas, since the flood of illegal immigrants began.

The president, House and Senate have all worked on their own plans to secure the border, but all efforts have led to strings of anti-illegal immigration and pro-illegal immigration protests across border states.

Perry did say during his interview that 80% of the illegal border crossers aren't children fleeing violence, and that violence along the border has also increased, which demands immediate attention and stronger border security.

"The security of this country is being put into jeopardy because of the lack of commitment from the federal government to secure the border," he said.

This issue of border security and the influx of illegal immigration is predicted to be a key part of the 2016 presidential election, and Conservatives have indicated that border security is their top priority in that regard.

Since 2002 to 2013, resources for border security have increased; there are 18,000 border patrol agents-up from 10,000-and the amount spent on the border has doubled from $5 billion to $12.4 billion.

But taxing all this is the number of minors crossing into the U.S. illegally. Nearly 60,000 have entered since October, compared to less than 40,000 for all of 2013 and less than 30,000 in 2012.
