California couple finds treasure buried on their own property

If you read about it, you would dismiss it as a far-flung fairy tale - but it's all true. A unnamed California couple were walking their dog last year when they spotted something shiny on the ground on their property. After some digging, it was discovered that eight rusted, buried cans held a stash of gold coins. The uncirculated coins are now valued as high as $10 million.

The couple plan to sell the coins on Amazon.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - All told, the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847-1894 are in mint condition.

Seen as the largest haul of buried treasure in U.S. history, the unnamed couple found them buried in rusting metal cans under a tree last April.

Join the campaign to end world hunger -- by going here!

"We've seen shipwrecks in the past where thousands of gold coins were found in very high grade, but a buried treasure of this sort is unheard of," David McCarthy of currency firm Kagin's says. McCarthy is advising the couple.

"I've never seen this face value in North America and you never see coins in the condition we have here," he says.

Residing in a rural area of California known as "Gold Country," the couple found the coins in an area of their land they called "Saddle Ridge." Coin dealers who have seen the discovery have now dubbed the area the "Saddle Ridge Hoard."

Located in a part of California where swarms of gold prospectors in the 1840s, who buried the coins - and why, remains a mystery.

Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, California, recently authenticated the coins. Some of the coins' face value adds up to about $27,000. But some of the coins are so rare they could sell for $1 million each.

The couple plan to sell the coins on Amazon.

David Hall, co-founder of the service says that it's "quite a story. People were walking along on their property in Northern California, noticed something, began digging and they found cans of gold coins.

"It should have happened to you and me."
