Those who identify themselves as Republicans are at lowest level in 25 years

A substantial 42 percent of Americans in a recent Gallup Poll have identified themselves as being politically Independent. What this implies - that both the Democrat and republican parties are found to be no longer relevant to a growing number of Americans, will have significant impact upon the nation's political landscape.

The 46 percent independent identification in the fourth quarter is a full three percentage points higher than Gallup has measured in any quarter during its telephone polling era.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The number of those identifying themselves as Independent was the highest ever since Gallup began conducting interviews by telephone 25 years ago. Republican identification fell to 25 percent, the lowest over that time span. At 31 percent, Democratic identification is unchanged from the last four years -- but down from 36 percent in 2008.

The findings were based upon 18,000 interviews, culled from 13 separate Gallup multiple-day polls conducted in 2013.

At least 40 percent of Americans have identified as independents over the past three years.

Republican identification peaked at 34 percent in 2004, the year George W. Bush won a second term in office. Republican identification has fallen nine percentage points during the Bush administration's troubled second term. Republican identification was down to 28 percent when Bush left office.

It was the lowest recorded amount of republican identification since 1983, when Gallup last conducted face-to-face interviews. It was at that time that Republican President Ronald Reagan was unpopular as the economy struggled to emerge from recession.

An improving economy in 1984 and the re-election for Reagan, Republican identification jumped to 30 percent, a level generally maintained until 2007.

Democratic identification has also declined in recent years. Those identifying as such fell five points from its recent high of 36 percent in 2008, the year President Barack Obama was elected. The current 31 percent of Americans identifying as Democrats matches the lowest annual average in the last 25 years.

Americans identifying as independents grew over the course of 2013. It grew as high as 46 percent in the fourth quarter, coinciding with the partial government shutdown in October and the problematic rollout of major provisions of the healthcare law.

The 46 percent independent identification in the fourth quarter is a full three percentage points higher than Gallup has measured in any quarter during its telephone polling era.
