Comment has professor on administrative leave

Being outspoken is one thing, but verbally wishing death on children is another matter entirely. Professor David Guth, an associate professor of Journalism at Kansas University's William Allen White School of Journalism let fly with a Tweet last week that has put him on administrative leave. The college is keeping mum on whether this is paid administrative leave, or Guth may be terminated over the remark.

'#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA,' David Guth tweeted. 'Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters, he continued. 'Shame on you. May God damn you.'

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Guth turned to Twitter in reply to a crazed gunman's rampage at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C., in which 12 people were killed.

"#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA,"  Guth tweeted. "Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters, he continued. "Shame on you. May God damn you."

Administrators at the University of Kansas has since suspended Guth.  The college's chancellor, Bernadette Gray-Little, announced the suspension last week, according to a local radio station, KMBZ.

"In order to prevent disruptions to the learning environment for students, the School of Journalism and the university, I have directed Provost Jeffrey Vitter to place Associate Professor Guth on indefinite administrative leave pending a review of the entire situation," she said.

"Professor Guth's classes will be taught by other faculty members."

The school has also released a statement condemning Guth's tweet. "The contents of Professor Guth's tweet were repugnant and in no way represent the views or opinions of the University of Kansas. "[I]t is truly disgraceful that these views were expressed in such a callous and uncaring way. We expect all members of the university community to engage in civil discourse and not make inflammatory and offensive comments."

Guth told The Associated Press in a phone interview that his tweet "got a conversation going - that was exactly what I wanted to do." He agreed that the university's action was appropriate in light of email threats he and others at the university had received.

"It is in the best interests and peace of mind of our students that I remove myself from the situation and let cooler heads prevail," Guth wrote. "I know what I meant. Unfortunately, this is a topic that generates more heat than light."
