SEATTLE, WA (Catholic Online) - For the first time, smoking pot at Seattle's annual Hempfest gathering will actually be legal and police participation won't be confined to citing drug abusers. Instead, police will be participating in the festival itself.
Seattle police have long averted their gaze during the event, and have permitted the casual consumption of pot at the annual festival which attracts tens of thousands of revelers each day. Historically, they have focused their energy on intoxicated drivers and other public safety concerns.
This year, they say they plan to do the same, but with one exception. They will be handing out specially marked bags of chips to attendees. On the inside, the bags contain the awesome deliciousness of Doritos brand corn chips, and on the outside they will have an invitation for munchie-driven consumers to visit a website designed to educate smokers on the nuances of the new law.
The website is "Marijwhatnow? A Guide to Legal Marijuana Use In Seattle."
Although marijuana consumption is now legal in the state, there are important limits on the practice. For example, smokers must purchase legally produced weed, which the state regulates and taxes.
Possession of up to an ounce is legal, but possessing more could result in arrest. Also, pot cannot be smoked in public, and it cannot be sold or given away. Driving under the influence remains quite illegal and will result in immediate arrest.
The legalized pot will go on sale starting next year. Policymakers are still working out the fine details of the plan.
Meanwhile, Hempfest revelers will descend on the city with their own bags of bud, ready to party. As the bands play and speakers give speeches the police will look on through the haze -and serve chips.
