The Armed Citizen Project is currently arming people in Tucson, Houston

As membership in the National Rifle Association swells - even after a great public hue and cry calling for gun registration following the Newton School massacre earlier this year, the group the Armed Citizen Project, is taking it one step further. They say they plan to give Chicago residents handguns - and extend their program to 15 other U.S. cities as well.

Planning to arm law-abiding citizens and train those in safety, legal, and tactical measures, all participants who receive a weapon and take the training program will receive a shotgun -- for free.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Based in Houston, Texas, the Armed Citizen Project is a nonprofit group that arms residents living in high-crime cities. The group is currently arming residents in the Houston and Tucson areas. The group has entered the national consciousness in a big way at the National Rifle Association's convention in Houston this weekend.

Planning to arm law-abiding citizens and train those in safety, legal, and tactical measures, all participants who receive a weapon and take the training program will receive a shotgun -- for free.

"Nothing in my house is worth losing your life," the group's motto proudly proclaims on its Web site.

Project founder and Indiana native 29-year-old Kyle Coplen said he grew up visiting the Chicago area and was an avid Cubs fan. He says he is heartbroken by the city's violence.

Denouncing Chicago's current gun policies "overzealous" and an "utter failure," which results in "historically high levels of gun violence," the group hopes to arm all law-abiding citizens. 

Though Chicago has been in the spotlight for the gun violence debate with the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton and many others, Chicago recorded a 43 percent decrease in murders last month, according to police.

"The first four months of this year, we're in a position we haven't been in since the mid-'60s as far as the murder rate goes," Supt. Garry McCarthy TV reporters.

McCarthy pointed to 84 fewer murders in the past seven months and about 180 fewer shootings so far this year. Chicago authorities have reported three people shot on the South and West sides this past weekend.
