Victims suffered non-life threatening injuries

The Sunday morning calm of mass at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico was shattered when a man, waving a knife, screamed "fake preacher" and stabbed four members of the choir. The assailant was caught and the four victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.

What prompted the attack remains a mystery, as the suspect is not a member of St. Jude's.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The suspect, 24-year-old Lawrence Capener faces several felony charges for the incident

Witnesses say that they saw Capener jumping pews before stabbing four choir members.
"While that was going on, people were just panicking. It was scary, you wouldn't think something like that would happen in church," one parishioner told the Los Angeles Times.

Another parishioner said she was sitting right behind the man, who "was kind of twitchy, sketchy looking. He had a tattoo of an upside-down star on his wrist."

Capener reportedly climbed over the pews, punched and then repeatedly stabbed the choir's lead singer. "He said, like, 'False preacher!" the witness said. "I don't know why."

The congregation subdued the attacker, at which point more parishioners could have been stabbed, Stinson said.

After the suspect was in handcuffs, Lucero said, "Old ladies were telling him, 'God bless you, forgive yourself,' and he was saying, 'You don't know about the Masons.'"

Neither witness had seen the man before. After the attack, Stinson said that the choir's lead singer had stab wounds on his left arm and that his jacket was "torn to pieces."

"At this point, we're just trying to deal with it," Father John C. Daniel said in a brief phone interview. "It sounds like everybody is going to be OK."

Several parishioners jumped on and held down Capener. What prompted the attack remains a mystery, as Capener is not a member of St. Jude's.

"The church service was closing and the choir had just begun their closing hymns when the male offender jumped several pews and quickly walked up the choir area," Officer Tasia Martinez said in an email. "Once there, the offender began stabbing choir members."
