LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Villaraigosa told reporters the move was encouraging.

The strike has brought the port of Long Beach to a virtual standstill as just four of the 14 docks are servicing ships. This has led to a backlog of cargo and sent several container ships seeking other ports.

The strike, now in its eighth day, has already cost the city millions.

Dock workers say they want a new contract. They have been working since June 30, 2010 without one.  They also say that their jobs are being outsourced through attrition saying their jobs are being taken by new hires who come from other states and countries.

Employers challenge the claims saying they have already offered a new contract with generous pay and pension increases.

More than 600,000 people are directly affected by the strike.
