LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - An administration official told CNN the U.S. Army's Delta Force top secret operations have commenced in Iraq.
The primary goal is to capture or eradicate top ISIS operatives, the official stated, adding that the group spent several weeks preparing for the operations that will be coordinated with Iraqi and Peshmerga units in the larger ETF unit.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter spoke at the Pentagon on Monday, in part to say the Special Operations forces began their missions, but was very vague."The only thing I'll say is the (Expeditionary Targeting Force) us in position, it is having an effect and operating, and I expect it to be a very effective part of our acceleration campaign," Carter stated.
He also mentioned raids, the seizure of people and places and stated ISIS-held hostages and prisoners would be freed.
In a nice change of pace, Carter stated the force would turn the tables on the terrorist group, causing it "to fear that anywhere, anytime, it may be struck."One U.S. official claimed Carter's statement was meant to indicate the Delta operations already started.
Information gleaned from the Delta's Syrian compound raid and by interrogating Abu Sayyaf's wife led to intelligence that helped other strategies for the Special Operations forces.
Carter stated the Pentagon would send a "specialized expeditionary targeting force" to conduct "raids and intelligence gathering missions," and that the "force will also be in a position to conduct unilateral operations in Syria," but for now missions are only set for Iraq.
Should a Syrian operation prove necessary, there are no ground forces to aid in any maneuvers.
Carter concluded, "momentum is now on our side."
