LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The first grave held the bodies of 78 older women and the second grave contained nearly 60 men, women and children. Sadly, the Sinjar director of intelligence, Qasim Samir, explained that the area surrounding the second grave has been rigged with homemade bombs, making a more thorough investigation difficult.
Samir explained the bodies belonged to people who "were shot and buried during the Daesh (Arabic acronym for IS) invasion last year." Sinjar was captured by ISIS militants in August 2014.A security official who preferred to remain anonymous said the discovery of the mass graces did not come as a surprise. "In other areas that have been taken back, we have found similar mass graves." Earlier this year, the nearby town of Snuny was reclaimed from the terrorist nation and seven mass graves were discovered.
Though hundreds of Yazidi women and girls have escaped or been released from ISIS, human rights groups believe thousands remain captives of the terrorist community.
Nawaf Ashur, a Sinjar resident who escaped when the city was taken, said: "Everyone who was missing a family member was hoping that they were still out there, that they are still alive and maybe they'll come back. But now with the news of each grave found, we know not all of them will come back. Some of them are never coming back."
