LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - Daily Mail reported thousands of foreign fighters -estimated to be as many as 30,000 from 100 different countries- might have joined ISIS since 2011. The reports were allegedly from anonymous "intelligence and law enforcement officials" who also believe some immigrants may have even traded their arms to jihadist in exchange for safe passage.
However, President Barack Obama will chair an international summit this Tuesday for the UN General Assembly for leaders fighting the IS group and "violent extremism."
Meanwhile, Congressional reports claim that despite the US-led air strikes in Iraq and Syria, recruitment of ISIS has yet to slow. The Pentagon has set up a $500 million program to train "moderate" Syrian rebels together with the continuous aerial bombardment of IS targets by the US-led coalition of Arab and Western powers. However, this action plan has been disappointing.
The first cross-border foray with 54 US-trained fighters ended in defeat when an Al-Qaeda linked group and another set of US trained fighters traded their arms to the jihadists for safe passage.
It is expected that world leaders will convene for the UN General Assembly this week on the continued issues concerning Syria and Iraq. It has been a year since the US president declared the formation of the international coalition tasked to "degrade and ultimately destroy" the Islamic State group.
ISIS continuously maintains strongholds in Syria and Iraq. They have moved to expand in other countries which include Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan.
