Iran throws a tantrum, threatens USA, Obama The Weak seeks to appease them

Threats should be taken seriously, to discourage further outbursts - classical Pavlovian conditioning.

Iran wants two things from the United States. The first is a treaty, the second is our destruction. Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei explained this in a speech on Aug. 17 which has now been published online.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a treaty between Iran, the United States and several other countries to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for a substantial curtailment of their nuclear program.

The treaty would boost Iran's economy and make life easier for millions of civilians in that country. Unfortunately, Iran's leadership does not seem to care about this and they continue with bombast, threatening the United States and its allies.

Kahmenei said in a rambling, angry speech on Aug. 17, that the United States was an "enemy" and that "We will confront them with all our power which is thankfully great in the present time."
Despite the hostile rhetoric, President Obama still wants the treaty passed.

It is unclear what the United States would really gain from the treaty, or if we could force compliance from Iran. The treaty allows for inspections, but there's no guarantee that Iran won't pursue its nuclear program in a clandestine fashion.

The fact is, what a person says matters. When a person threatens to strike you, you would be foolhardy to ignore the threat. He who does not strike first will be the first struck, or so the Roman proverb goes. Nobody wants conflict with Iran, but when that nation's leaders continually threaten hostile action against the United States, we have a right to self-defense and that could include a preemptive strike against their military or strategic assets. Such a policy of responding to bombastic threats with sharp, decisive action will create a powerful disincentive for world leaders to rattle sabers against the United States.

Such a strike does not have to harm people, but could be targeted to diminish the capability of a haughty, self-professed enemy to strike at the United States and our allies. The mere bombing of a runway or the unveiling of an advanced weapon in the region might be enough. Sanctions obviously create pain that the leadership can feel.

No matter what course of action we choose, rewarding such rhetoric by handing them something they want should be the last thing we consider. The fact that Obama is so eager to give Iran what they desire, in spite of their threatening attitude says as much about Obama as it does Iran's extremist leaders.
