MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The White House confirmed reports about the death of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar are credible and true.

Rumors of Omar's deteriorating health made its rounds in the past, but the latest claims marked the confirmation of his illness. However, militant group spokesperson Zabihullah Mujadid denied the claims and explained that it was baseless and Omar was still alive.

The announcement of Omar's death comes just two days before the peace talks of the Afghan government and the Taliban in Pakistan.

Omar is known as one of the most secretive leaders of Al-Qaeda, who led a bloody and gruesome insurgency against the U.S. led forces after U.S. troops managed to seize his rule over Afghanistan in 2001.

A senior Afghan official reports, "We can confirm that Mullah Omar died two years ago... in Pakistan due to an illness. He was buried in Zabul province (in southern Afghanistan)." However continued investigations on the validity of these reports are being initiated by the Afghan government.

Zafar Hashemi, deputy spokesman of Afghan president Ashraf Ghani stated, "We are aware of the reports of the passing away of Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader. We are still in the process of checking those reports, and as soon as we get confirmation or verification, we will inform the Afghan people and the media."

Rumors began to spread that the death of Omar is just part of a move to disrupt the peace talks in Pakistan. The whereabouts of Omar have been a mystery for over a year and he was believed to be hiding somewhere in Pakistan.

Over the last 13 years, Omar stayed out of the public eye among power struggles occuring with the Taliban group, as well as with fears of a growing Islamic State insurgency in the country.

The terrorist group remains mum about the reports and on whether a new leader to replace Omar in his position will be announced in the coming days.
