LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - After suffering from pneumonia and being admitted to the hospital, King Abdullah passed away at 90-years-old.

He became King in August 2005, but had been in charge of Saudi Arabia since 1996, after his half-brother's stroke.

According to CNN, "In the context of the kingdom's conservative circles, Abdullah was seen as reformer and often came up against the more hard-line clerics."

During his time as the king, he had taken steps toward broader freedoms, a better education and large infrastructure projects.

It was under King Abdullah's ruling that the country began to slowly destroy al Qaeda, "capturing or killing its leaders in the kingdom, forcing the remnants underground and sidelining radical preachers," according to CNN.

Saudi Arabia became the lead Arab nation in the U.S.'s plan to annihilate the extremest terrorist group, ISIS in both Iraq and Syria.

According to CNN, the next king will be Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz.
