During the Muslim festival, Muslim's sacrifice sheep, cattle, camels and other animals to show gratitude to God for not forcing Abraham to kill his son, and to show gratitude for the blessings they receive.
The killed animals have their meat divided into three equal portions. One portion is kept by the person for himself, one portion is given to the poor, and the final portion is given to friends, relatives or neighbors.
October 5 marked the beginning of the festival for Iraqi Shiites, and the majority of Indonesian Muslims. Pakistanis started celebrating the next day.
The festival is celebrated by all Muslims, though it starts at different days based on moon sightings.
This year, Eid al-Adha coincideded with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippurm the first time that Jews and Muslims have celebrated a holiday on the same day since 1981. This alignment only occurs once every 33 years.
