Syrian Civil War, began in March of 2011 shows no signs of abating

It's only going to get worse, the United nations says. Another two million Syrian are expected to flee their home nation by nation year, to become refugees. Even worse is the projection that another 2.25 million Syrians will become displaced within their own nation. The civil war that began there in march of 2011 has shown no sings of letting up.

Of these refugees are women and children who have crossed from Turkey into Bulgaria. The UNHCR has described that the available accommodation is overcrowded, unsafe and 'dire.'

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A new campaign to raise aid to help Syrian victims is being planned. Officials affiliated with 10 U.N. agencies, the International Organization for Migration and 18 other aid groups met in Amman on last month to plan their strategy for next year.

According to a summary posted on a U.N. Website, the "most likely scenario was perceived to be continuation and escalation of the conflict with increased fragmentation, disruption of essential services and further erosion of coping mechanisms."

It has been forecast that that up to 8.3 million people, or more than a third of Syria's pre-war population of 23 million would be in dire need of aid by the end of 2014. This represents a 37 percent increase over 2013. The figure includes 6.5 million internally displaced people, which is a 54 percent increase.

Syrian refugees are expected to hit 3.2 million by December 2013, one million more than current figures, and rise by an additional two million next year, the summary said.

The majority of Syrian refugees have been registered in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq. The document said planning for the needs of refugees in 2014 would also include those arriving in Europe and North Africa, as necessary.

Egypt says that it is already hosting about 300,000 Syrian refugees. Coupled with Egypt's already roiling political turmoil means that many of those already there are worried about their own well-being. It's unlikely than any further Syrian refugees will seek asylum in Egypt.

The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR says 17 countries, including 12 European ones, are involved in a program to resettle Syrian refugees. Of these refugees are women and children who have crossed from Turkey into Bulgaria. The UNHCR has described that the available accommodation is overcrowded, unsafe and "dire."

U.N. agencies have begun shifting the focus of aid planning from a purely emergency response to helping Syria and its neighbors meet huge humanitarian needs in the long term, in the absence of any solid prospect for peace.

In the meantime, a planned international conference to end the conflict has been repeatedly postponed and is now scheduled for mid-November. Diplomacy has lately focused on Syria's chemical weapons arsenal, which is being destroyed under a U.S.-Russian agreement struck last month.
