LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- Yesterday, a terrorist drove a Hyundai 4x4 SUV across Westminster Bridge in London, intentionally running over pedestrians on the bridge. About 40 people were struck.
After the rampage on the bridge, the attacker crashed his SUV into a wall surrounding Westminster Palace. The terrorist then exited the vehicle armed with a large knife, and attempted to force his way into Westminster Palace, possibly to attack members of parliament there. He was stopped by a police officer, now identified as Keith Palmer, 48. The terrorist stabbed Palmer, who did not survive his injuries. Other police arrived and shot the terrorist, who was subsequently incapacitated.
In the aftermath, one woman was pulled from the Thames. It is unclear if she jumped or was struck and thrown off the bridge. She remains in serious condition and has not been named.
Aysha Frade, 43 has been named as the first victim. She attempted to dodge the attacker and was struck by a bus and killed. Another man, Kurt Cochran, 54, an American from Utah was thrown from the bridge and fell onto concrete below. He died from his injuries.
The dead have been identified but the attacker has not. He is said to have been British-born, and was known to MI5, the British intelligence service. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The terrorist is loaded into an ambulance. He later died from his injuries.
One of the last people to be removed from the site of the attack was the wounded terrorist who appears to have required resuscitation. He later died of his injuries.
Police immediately went to work investigating the attack and overnight they raided six homes, arresting eight people. The vehicle was likely a rental car.
The attacker's car, which was used to mow down people on Westminster Bridge. About 40 people were injured.
The use of a car as a weapon is a disturbing trend. Several attacks have now used cars or trucks to mow down civilians in crowded, public spaces. While most people survive these maiming attacks, they create chaos and confusion, and inspire fear of public spaces, which is a critical aim of any terror campaign.
The investigation is ongoing and more details are expected to be released in the days ahead.
Kurt Cochran and his wife Melissa, Americans from Utah, were victims of the attack. Kurt was thrown off Westminster Bridge by impact, and fell to his death on a concrete section below. His wife was injured, but survived.
Aysha Frade, 43, and a mother of two children, was killed when she attempted to dodge the attack and was hit by a bus.
