LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Aylan Kurdi, the drowned Syrian toddler, was mourned around the world when his tiny body was discovered on the shore of the Turkish coast.

Thousands paid tribute to Kurdi and for the thousands of drowned migrants he represents. Kurdi will forever be remembered as the poster child of the migrant flight from Islamic State rule, but in a horrifying turn, Charlie Hebdo has presented him as a grown sex-offender.

The satirical magazine released a cartoon of young Kurdi once before, which sparked both outrage and support, but the most recent release includes a grown Kurdi with an ape-like face and his hands reaching out to grope a screaming woman's bottom.

The caption reads, "What would Aylan have grown up to be? An ***-groper in Germany."

The comic's creation came about as a result of the attacks and rape on New Year's Eve in the German city of Cologne, which resulted in the rise of a vigilante group who keeps an open eye on the streets to protect women from sexual predators.

During the New Year's Eve celebrations, there were initially a total of 170 criminal complaints, with 120 reported to be of a sexual nature.

Though not all of the attackers were migrants, a senior officer did state "several thousand male persons with a migrant background" threw fireworks and bottles into the crowd."

Since the New Year's Eve celebration, over 516 complaints have been lodged, with 40 percent related to migrants and sexual assault.

Many who sympathize with the refugee crisis have spoken out against the Hebdo comic, which many believe has crossed the line from satire into blatant disrespect.

Twitter users commented the cartoon was "racist," "tasteless" and "unbelievably sick."

Another Tweeted, "I'm ashamed that I once even felt sympathy with Charlie Hebdo. The people who make these cartoons have proven that humanity died with Aylan."

Regardless of the cartoon's critics, Charlie Hebdo continues to release edgy, satirical comics to provoke debate and awareness.
