MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - The two Russian warships will participate in a three-day joint naval exercise series with Iran warships, according to Fars News Agency. The warships were spotted last Sunday in the Northern part of Iran at the Anzali port.

"The [Russian] warships, Volgodonsk and Makhachkala docked in Anzali Port [near the Caspian Sea], in the fourth naval zone, on the afternoon of 9 August," according to reports.

The three-day joint naval training exercises came weeks after Iran and several global powers sealed a nuclear accord that will provide the Islamic republic with billions of dollars in sanction relief as a return for the slight restrictions in Iran's nuclear program.

Russia and Iran have grown close over recent years. Several delegates representing each country have frequented each of their regions to seal arm deals and other agreements aimed to strengthen the nuclear program in Iran. Earlier this year, the two countries agreed to begin the construction of several new nuclear power plants in Iran. Russia also agreed to sell Iran one of its advance missile defense systems that promises to prevent attacks coming from Western powers.

Earlier this week, a senior Italian Naval commander warned the U.S. against possible military actions against the Iranian interests. The response according to the commander is "unpredictably strong" and is expected from the U.S. forces.

Meanwhile, the Russian fleet was warmly welcomed by the Iranian Naval commanders and staffs. The Russian naval officers carried "a message of peace and friendship." The officials of the Russian fleet were reported to be attending several meetings with Iran's local and military officials.

The joint naval exercise is said to be part of the two nation's intentions to expand "bilateral economic, political and military cooperation" and is considered one of the priorities of the visit. Another Russian fleet is scheduled to dock in the Northern part of Iran this coming October.
