LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A little over 930 miles away from Moscow, something exploded in the night sky of the Sverdlovsk region of Russia, turning day into night and stunning hundreds of motorists who witnessed the event.

So far several dramatic videos depicting these events have been released and are making the rounds on YouTube and the web, more are being released daily.

Some Russian scientists have claimed that the phenomena was caused by a meteor falling to earth, but Phil Plait, the writer of Slate's Bad Astronomy blog thinks it could be something else.

"The color is odd; the reddish glow, if accurately portrayed in these videos, isn't something I generally see in bolide-which is a meteorite that enters earths atmosphere-videos and photos (or from the few I have seen with my own eye)," he wrote.

"They tend to be green or blue, or just white. Not always, but just in general. Of course, the clouds may be affecting the color, too."

The Russian military has also stated that it was not responsible for the phenomena. Neither experimental-weapons testing or ammunition disposal were to blame.

"No exercise and training were underway on that day, and no military units are based in the region, so we have nothing to do with it," a military representative reported to E1, a Russian news firm.

This all begs the question, what the heck is going on in Russia?
