LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A Ukrainian army Mi-8 helicopter was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade at a base near the eastern town of Kramatorsk on April 25, according to a statement released by the defense ministry. It was hit in the fuel tank and exploded.

Pray for peace.

Following the attack, which is believed to have been orchestrated by pro-Russian or Russian backed separatists, fears arose when Germany announced that it believed a group of military observers operating in eastern Ukraine had gone missing.

The observers were delegates from the Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe, three German soldiers, a German translator, and military observers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden and Denmark. It was later confirmed that the group had been captured by Pro-Russian separatists near the town of Slovaiansk.

While Ukraine continues to boil over, Western nations are moving closer to imposing a new round of sanctions on Russia. Following the belief that Russia has not attempted to fulfill any of its promises made during negotiations in Geneva in mid-April.

NATO estimates put the Russian forces at the border between to two countries at around 40,000. While those forces have began war games just a mile from the border, Ukraine's Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, accused Russia of wanting to start another world war, and has called for international help against Russia.

"The aggressive efforts of the Russian military on Ukraine's soil will lead to conflict on European soil," he said during a cabinet meeting. "Russia's support for the terrorists in Ukraine constitutes an international crime, and we call on the international community to unite against the Russian aggression."

President Barrack Obama is working with the European Union's ministers to put levy a new package of sanctions on Russia, while US forces are welcomed into Baltic States to reassure allies that the US is committed to their protection.

Latvia and Poland have already accepted a contingent of US troops, and Lithuania and Estonia are set to receive US forces during the last week of April.
