Mystery surrounds musty old relic; scientists called

Ten-year-old Alexander Kettler finally found his mummy - the Egyptian kind, in his grandma's attic. The relic was found in sarcophagus in his grandma's Diepholz home. His father plans to ask scientists in Berlin to check it out.

Alexander's dad, Lutz Wolfgang Kettler plans to ask Berlin scientists to examine what appears to be a mummy, which was discovered by his son, to determine if it's really the body of an ancient Egyptian.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The mummy's origin and authenticity remain a mystery. Little Alexander made the discovery, packed together with a death mask and a canopic jar traditionally used by ancient Egyptians to hold the deceased's organs.

Alexander's dad, Lutz Wolfgang Kettler plans to ask Berlin scientists to examine what appears to be a mummy, which was discovered by his son, to determine if it's really the body of an ancient Egyptian.

Kettler says that the sarcophagus and other trappings were likely replicas. He thinks that the mummy might be real. Kettler's late father traveled in the 1950s to North Africa, and he now wonders if he brought back a surprising souvenir.

Kettler told newspaper reporters that his father never spoke about the boxes in the attic and they were probably stored there shortly after the house was built in 1970 in Diepholz, in northern Germany.

"He was of the older generation who experienced a lot in the war and didn't really talk about anything. I do seem to remember him mentioning having been to the city of Derna in Libya," Kettler said.

Kettler plans to drive the mummy to Berlin for examination by scientists.

If the mummy is proven to be an authentic Egyptian antiquity, authorities in Egypt will seek to bring the relic back to the country.

"Diplomacy is a successful way to resolve these sorts of issues, and it is not costly," Abdel Maqsoud, deputy director of the Antiquities Sector at Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities, told Egypt Independent. "We should first check if the piece left the country legally and find out if it is registered at any museum."
