LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to NBC News, an 8-month-old girl was sleeping peacefully when a deadly earthquake passed through Mashiki, Japan.
The child's mother, grandparents and 4-year-old brother were reported to be in the living room and kitchen when the earthquake took place.
As the earth shook around them, the roof of the family's home collapsed around the little girl but, miraculously, the crossbeams fell in such a way that the child's crib was nestled safely in a small cavity.
Her mother was able to glimpse her through a small crevice but was unable to reach the infant.
When help arrived, fifty people gathered to dig from the roof down toward the child.
Authorities reported the rescue took six hours, but at 3:45 a.m. they reached the entirely uninjured child.
Though the girl and her family were granted a miracle, over 134 aftershocks were reported, leaving over 800 people injured and nine people dead.
Firefighters fought to put out fires, rescue trapped citizens and traversed crumbling roads to save as many people as possible.
According to The Telegraph, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave his condolences Friday morning.
Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga added, "We are combing through Mashiki where the damage was serious to see if there are any people who are still seeking rescue."
