Public transportation used far more in China than in the west

There's certainly one thing China has the United States, and the entire western world beat: the utilization of public transport, in particular, its railways. According to official data, China's railways transported some 453.25 million passengers during the first quarter of the year, up 0.7 percent from a year earlier.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to a report posted on the railways ministry's Web site, the railways delivered 998.61 million metric tons of goods during the January-March period, up 3.2 percent year-on-year,.

To meet the demand of industrial production and the people's basic needs, the ministry has prioritized the delivery of major essential goods.

In an official tally, the country's railways transported 594.07 million tons of coal, 34.62 million tons of oil, 27.1 million tons of grain and 27.58 million tons of fertilizers and pesticides in the first three months.

Passenger rail transport is one of the principal means of transport in the People's Republic of China, with 1.456 billion railway trips taken in 2008. It is operated by the Ministry of Railways of the PRC. The Spring Festival Travel Season is the peak railway travel season of the year.

China is currently redeveloping its entire railway network to produce a modern high-speed network. By the end of 2010 China expects to have a railway network length covering 91,000 km, including over 8,000 km capable for 200+ km/h running.
