LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent in Teotihuacán, Mexico, which is about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, revealed a subterranean tunnel of liquid mercury.

The tunnel and three chambers were discovered after several years of research and investigation, leading archaeologists to recover jade statues, jaguar remains and an interesting box full of varied shells and rubber balls.

According to Reuters, Mexican researcher Sergio Gómez explained he and his team found "large quantities" of mercury in a chamber at the end of a secret tunnel that has been sealed for nearly 1,800 years.

"It's something that completely surprised us," he stated, adding no one knows why the mercury was left in the tunnel.

Gómez wondered if it was meant to symbolize an underworld river or lake but there is no evidence to confirm or deny his hypothesis.

The pyramid has been the source of several mysteries and the remains of the Aztec king buried somewhere within the structure has yet to be discovered.

George Cowgill, a U.S. archaeologist who has spent over 40 years excavating Teotihuacan, believes the mercury finding will lead Gómez and his team to a tomb.

National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) archaeologists work at a tunnel that may lead to a royal tombs discovered at the ancient city of Teotihuacan in 2011. Gomez said their findings could lead to settling the debate as to how power was distributed in the city.

"But it's still very uncertain," Cowgill stated, "and that is what keeps everybody in suspense."

These findings are now two-years-old, with very little discovered since.

Several amazing works of art have been recovered but archaeologists are still uncertain why mercury, which is rare in Mexico, is present in the tunnel.

The Temple of the Feathered Serpent is Mexico's third largest pyramid and is known for its unbelievably amazing secrets.

Even with the help of robots, scientists and archaeologists are unable to determine where the tomb may be, why there is liquid mercury or what other chambers remain.

Gómez recently told The Guardian: "At the beginning of this investigation we thought the tunnel was a metaphoric representation of the underworld, the place of creation and transmission of power, and that we would find a tomb of Teotihuacán's leaders in this very scared place.

"It would have been a transcendent discovery which would help us understand Teotihuacán's power structure and system of government, but we have almost finished the excavation - and there is no tomb."
