Trump says he will not back down from campaign pledges.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Donald Trump is meeting with Mexican President Pena Nieto. His visit comes following an invitation from the president to meet and talk in private. The meeting is surprising because Pena Nieto has accused Trump of racism and of behaving like a dictator.

Trump has made remarks which had an inflammatory effect, but a careful study of those remarks reveals that he was not speaking against any particular race, or even all immigrants. Instead, he was speaking out against criminal behavior. He made a valid point, that the immigrants often arriving in the country illegally are "not the best." But he also implied they were criminals and rapists.

Criminals, perhaps technically, since their entry into the country is illegal. But rapists? The use of the word was extremely inflammatory and is difficult to defend.

Still, it is difficult to qualify oneself as the best when your first act in a country is a criminal offense.

Some of those who cross the border illegally do so to traffic drugs and people. And a few do commit sex offenses, but the population on the whole is by no means a sexual or even criminal threat to the nation. Mexican immigrants, both legal and illegal ultimately find work and pay taxes and their children do assimilate over time.

The vast majority of immigrants are decent people with morals who are desperately seeking to improve their lives. It is difficult to blame them for their efforts. However, there is a legal process of immigration and those who enter illegally effectively cheat those who are waiting their turn.

Each nation has a sovereign right to control its borders. Without a border, you cannot have a country.

To defend the border, Trump suggested he would build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Most have scoffed at the notion Mexico would pay for the wall, but it is possible by taxing remittances sent to Mexico from the United States. Other taxes and fees could help cover the costs.

President Pena Nieto has made clear he wishes to maintain good relations with the U.S. and the mutual security of both nations is a primary concern. He also made clear that Mexico would not pay for a wall. But he does wish to continue cooperating with the U.S. for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Hopefully, the meeting between the two will dampen the rhetoric and improve relations. A good rapport with the Mexican president could help Trump win more votes and may make it easier for him to secure the border if he does win the presidency.
