LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to CNN, a senior Mexican law enforcement source stated, "Due to the proximity (to the U.S.), it makes it easier to extradite him."
Apparently, Altiplano's conditions made Guzmán uncomfortable. His lawyer explained how his client wanted to be extradited to the United States "as soon as possible" as Altiplano's conditions were unbearable and caused him to fall seriously ill.
Mexico's National Safety Commission released a statement, in which it was explained that Guzmán was transferred to the "CEFERESO No. 9" facility. "Such transfer was carried out with full respect for the human rights of the inmate," it stated.
While Guzmán jumps from prison to prison, the United States has been hard at work to prepare his transfer into U.S. custody.
American officials said the current plan is to seize Guzmán, who will then be sent to Brooklyn, NY, to stand trial for federal offenses.
José Refugio RodrÃguez, Guzmán's lead attorney, confirmed the transfer and explained lawyers were not notified. He added that Guzmán may have only heard of the transfer at the last minute.
Guzmán was notorious before his first arrest as he was the head of a serious drug and crime ring, but after he escaped from maximum security prisons - twice - his fame skyrocketed.
When he was captured again in January, Mexican President Enrique Peńa Nieto announced El Chapo's extradition would happen "as soon as possible."
