LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Knights Templar have been operating out of the central-western Mexican state of Michoacan for years. Kidnappings, extortion, murder and drug trafficking are common with Mexican drug cartels, and the Knights Templar are no different, keeping hold of their territory in the region through violence.

This Lent season, are you "Doing Good?"

Gomez was arrested in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan, just 135 miles west of Mexico City.

This region of Mexico has been a central flashpoint in the ongoing drug war. Just in the last year it has been the site of numerous gun battles between Knights Templar members and vigilante groups which have taken to dealing with these situations themselves, frustrated at the lack of action and ineffectiveness of the Mexican government.

This month, go green with God!

The Mexican government has taken steps to recognize some of these groups, after calls for them to disband last year failed. They have also sent some government forces into the region to aid in battling the cartel forces.

Government officials have reported that the presence of Mexican troops and vigilantes has significantly hampered the Knights Templar.
