Foot and mouth disease spreads throughout Northern Africa

Reports of deadly bovine disease reported in Algeria, Tunisia

Drastic measures are being undertaken and significant resources are being mobilized against foot and mouth disease in Algeria and other parts of Northern Africa. A highly contagious bovine disease, livestock has been effected in the eastern part of Algeria. Vaccinations, stricter monitoring, trade restrictions, quarantines coupled with the occasional, slaughter of contaminated animals are among the measures being taken to contain this infectious and frequently fatal viral disease.

The Health Department have also mobilized a plethora of veterinarians called to pay visits to the farms in order to deal with suspicious situation.

ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - In the Eastern departments such as El Tarf, Souk Ahras, T├ębessa and in Khenchela, local authorities are mobilized at the highest level to prevent foot and mouth disease from spreading to other areas.

The disease appeared in late last month in Tunisia; first in Bizerte, Hammamet and Nabeul, before it progressed to the west where an outbreak was reported in the governorate of Jendouba.

Starvation never takes a vacation --

El Tarf has since been placed on a heightened state of alert. To cope with the threat, measures have been taken, raging from installing wheel dips at border posts to disinfect vehicles from Tunisia, to the closing of the markets.

Veterinary services, private practitioners have lent a hand in a systematic survey in herds of border town. A free vaccination campaign has been launched and about 59,000 doses of vaccine have been distributed to farmers to deal with this epidemic threatening the Eastern parts of the country.

The Health Department have also mobilized a plethora of veterinarians called to pay visits to the farms in order to deal with suspicious situation.

"The situation comes while we are fattening our animals with green grass which is in large quantity in this part of the season," a farmer said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "The foot and mouth disease that began spreading from our neighboring Tunisia makes all of us being mobilized to contain it and prevent it from contaminating other livestock. The vaccination campaign launched by our authorities is likely to satisfy farmers."
