New terrorist organization working its way through the Sahel region

Stepping up procedures to halt money laundering, Algerian authorities have made headway in thwarting the financing of terrorist organizations. Authorities are confident that once the money trail to various groups dries up, terrorist activity will grind to a halt in the region.

Other sources indicate that this group is recruiting new elements through the Sahel region. These new recruits are being trained under the new strategy to have cells operate in small groups of five people or less.

ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - In addition to investigating the financial underground, Algerian authorities have also reduced the number of terrorist attacks. They have also maintained a steady pressure against AQIM, the chief operative in the area. The military and police have seized equipment and weapons caches and seek to geographically isolate the AQIM network.

Algeria has long been an active member in the war against terrorism. Since the 1990s, Algeria has been committed to a vigorous campaign against al-Qaeda. It has since been learned that the Islamic Maghreb is being reorganized in southern Libya and Northern Mali in order to launch terrorist attacks against Western interests in the months to come.

Other sources indicate that this group is recruiting new elements through the Sahel region. These new recruits are being trained under the new strategy to have cells operate in small groups of five people or less.

The strategy is intended to prevent the loss of innocent lives. "Terrorist organizations in the Sahel have acquired experience in organization in order to comply with the current situation, imposed by the presence of Western forces -- mainly the French.

"What confuses the situation above all others is the complicity and support of the local populations for terrorist groups. When they operate in small, well-organized groups, they always wind up with positive results. Their new recruits also know the surrounding desert area, perfectly," a Mauritanian analyst said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

AQIM in the Sahel based has greatly benefited from regional instability to expand control of the area. Policies adopted by the nation of Algeria has been applauded by international organizations. Many agree that the halting the financing of criminal activities through the paying of ransom of hostages is an effective method.
