Government officials defend action saying it 'clashes with state religion of Christianity'

Freedom of religion is not a given in many parts of the world. Angola, Africa's second largest producer of oil has now reportedly declared Islam illegal and has ordered all of that country's mosques to be shuttered.

A Google image search revealed that the photograph many sites are using with this story to show the destruction of mosques is from 2008 when the Housing & Land Rights Network was illustrating the destruction of Bedouin homes in Israel.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - In what is seen as a highly arrogant and repressive move, Angolan Minister of culture Rosa Cruz e Silva says that the mosques in the largely Christian country would be closed until further notice. Silva described Islam as a "sect" that would be banned as counter to Angolan customs and culture.

There are also unconfirmed reports that mosques across the nation are being destroyed. Angolan President Jose Edurado dos Santos reportedly told the Osun Defense daily: "This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country."

Islam, which is a religion associated with less than one per cent of the population of 19 million, 194 other "sects" have been banned in the nation. More than half the Angolan population is Christian.

"The legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights [and] their mosques will be closed until further notice," Cruz e Silva said.

Clashes between Christians and Muslim people are frequently reported in the local media.

It most be noted that some news outlets such as the  International Business Times if any of these claims are actually true.

The site reports two unidentified officials at the Angolan Embassy in Washington D.C. said they have not been made aware of any kind of Islam ban in the African nation.

Other discrepancies found were a Google image search revealed that the photograph many sites are using with this story to show the destruction of mosques is from 2008 when the Housing & Land Rights Network was illustrating the destruction of Bedouin homes in Israel.
