LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to The Times, 82-yaer-old Carmen Longarela Latas and 88-year-old Carmen Vázquez Lamela are responsible for the kidnapping and selling of thirteen babies.
Police investigators believe the mothers were pressured to relinquish their children by local gang members who worked with the nuns to sell children.
As ludicrous as the situation sounds, operation "Baby" revealed irregularities of the adoption of babies from the Hogar Madre Encarnación Franciscan convent from 2005 through 2011.A third woman - the former mother superior of a Franciscan nunnery in northern Spain, has also come under investigation with 19 civil servants and social workers from the Galician regional government.
Each is a suspect in the intimidation of vulnerable new mothers and the selling of babies to desperate adoptive parents.According to Premier, Cilene Domingues Lourenco, a Brazillian woman, reported on her stay at the convent after giving birth.
Lourenco stepped forward, saying she was forced to sign a consent form to give her child up for adoption.
Meanwhile, lawyers involved in the case claim the nuns received help from criminal gangs to sell the children. None of the nuns have admitted to the accusations and none have been charged.
