The key to a happy marriage: Brain scans reveal what positively affects women

Positive emotions rather than negative ones influence the wife mentality.

In choosing a partner, most people consider who will stay with them, no matter what. However, according to research, a happy marriage is actually achieved by sharing positive emotions. Although within good relationships, people develop camaraderie during hardships and struggles, our brain is helping us choose that one person, depending on how good they make us feel. Recent studies of brain scans reveal that women who are happy in their marriage are more sensitive to the positive feelings of their spouses, rather than the negative.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Brain signals of 14 elderly, married volunteer women from Toronto were used in the study. The signals were monitored while watching random silent clips of their husbands and strangers, each lasting for ten seconds, and labels were intentionally mismatching the emotions being displayed.

The idea was to confuse and surprise the women about the reaction, according to The Daily Mail. Research conducted by the Rotman Research Institute found that women are more responsive to unexpected positive emotions of their husbands, rather than negative feelings - which amounted to almost the same amount of brain activity while watching the strangers.

"Many of us tend to think we choose partners who help us work on our issues, and of course, that's part of what happens in good relationships. But science increasingly shows that we choose one another for how good they make us feel," said Dr. Duana Welch, in a statement with the outlet.

The study's volunteers also filled out a questionnaire to determine the level of satisfaction they get from their marriage. Accordingly, those who scored higher had more brain activity recorded in the regions that trigger empathy.

Dr. Welch, the author of "Love Factually," was not involved in the study, but suggests that emotionally independent people are happier in their marriages.
