LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the Catholic Herald, The Pontiff spoke to graduates of Jesuit schools and universities to share the desperation displaced refugees feel and the hopelessness of knowing other nations fear them.

He told the alumni of the World Union and European Confederation of Jesuit Alumni, who were in Rome to attend a conference on migration and the refugee crisis, that there are over 65 million people who have been displaced from their homes and the humanitarian is the greatest crisis "after the Second World War."

To drive home the point, His Holiness explained: "At this place and time in history, there is great need for men and women who hear the cry of the poor and respond with mercy and generosity."

He called upon the students' Jesuit education and deep understanding of the Gospel and its vales to explain how they could actively help the Church eradicate terror.

The Pope explained anyone can help the Church if they "respond more fully to the human tragedy of refugees through acts of mercy that promote their integration into the European context and beyond."

He stated: "I encourage you to welcome refugees into your homes and communities, so that their first experience of Europe is not the traumatic experience of sleeping cold on the streets, but one of warm human welcome.

"Remember that authentic hospitality is a profound Gospel value that nurtures love and is our greatest security against hateful acts of terrorism."

The Pontiff described the refugee children and younger generations who are being denied an education in their struggle for survival.

He urged the recent grads to join forces with the Jesuit Refugee Service to "put your mercy in motion" and to help "build a stronger Europe and a brighter future for refugees."

Pope Francis reminded the audience they would never be alone, especially when so many religious organizations and individuals were dedicated to helping those who society has rejected.

"Remember that the love of God accompanies you in this work," he stated. "You are God's eyes, mouth, hands and heart in this world.

"I urge you to help transform your communities into places of welcome where all God's children have the opportunity not simply to survive, but to grow, flourish and bear fruit."
