Vinny Desautels grew his hair for two years before donating.

In a "cruel twist of fate," seven-year-old Vinny Desautels, who grew his hair out for two years to donate to cancer patients, has now been diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 cancer.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Despite being constantly teased by his peers, Vinny grew his blonde hair out to 13-inches before cutting off his ponytail to make wigs for kids with cancer. "I want to help people, so they don't have to go to the doctors to fight cancer," Vinny told Fox 40.

According to Vinny's mother, Amanda, the young boy was mistaken for a girl many times, but "he stuck with it because he knew it was a good cause."

Shortly after donating his long locks, Vinny and his family found out he had an aggressive stage 4 cancer after doctors discovered malignant growths around his hip, right cheek and around his eye.

"Our precious grandson ... is fighting a battle that no child should have to fight - the fight against cancer," expressed Vinny's grandparents on the GoFundMe page they set up for the family during this tense time. "We were heartbroken to get this diagnosis. With that said, I would like to humbly thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement.

"We are a close family, and we are fighting this together."

Although doctors are still working to determine the type of cancer Vinny has, he remains strong and is glad he had the chance to help others who face the battle he now faces.

"As long as we're there with a smile, telling him he's going to be alright, he has the same attitude. Vinny is like us - an eternal optimist," stated Vinny's father, Jason.
