The Moon is going to collide with Earth, in about 65 BILLION years.

The Moon is going to collide with Earth, in about 65 BILLION years.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- The sky is falling! Sort of. According to Dr. Jason Barnes, planetary scientist at the University of Iowa, the Moon will collide with the Earth in 65 billion years. He explained himself in an interview with Forbes.

The finding is strange, considering the Moon is presently drifting away from Earth at the rate of a few inches per year. But the reason for this drift is the tides on Earth. About two-thirds of the planet is covered in water which bulges ahead of the Moon when it passes directly above. As a result, the Moon is gently, but steadily pushed away.

However, in millions to billions of years, the Earth is expected to loses its ocean. That's because as the Sun ages, it will expand and heat the planet. That process will be very slow, and much slower than what we observe today in terms of global warming, but it will be unstoppable.

Earth will be uninhabitable for humans in as little as 150 million years to about one billion. You and I won't be here for that. Nor will we be around to worry about the evaporation of the oceans, which will take hundreds of millions of years.

When the oceans do evaporate, the tides will stop, and the Moon will not be pushed away. Instead, the Moon will be pulled by Earth's gravity until it spirals inward over tens of billions of years.

Some 65 billion years from now, the Moon will collide with Earth and the crust will become a liquefied, molten sea covering the entire planet.

The Earth will eventually cool again over billions of years and will remain as a lifeless, dead planet until the end of time.

The scenario is a bit depressing, but we can take comfort it isn't something we need to worry about. It is possible humanity could learn to travel between the stars and settle the galaxy in the meantime, in which case our most remote descendants may have a front row view. But given the rates of human pollution of the planet and our divisive, destructive nature, the odds are against us.
