LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Scientists from NOAA assumed that a microphone more than six miles down on the floor of the Mariana Trench would detect virtually nothing. They expected the spot to be among the quietest on Earth. Instead, they heard clear sounds from very far away.
Among the sounds they detected were ship's propellers, a category 5 earthquake, and a variety of whale calls. Even a category 4 typhoon passed overhead, and the microphone detected the violence on the surface, miles above.
Sound travels quite far underwater, something naval personnel have known for a very long time. This is because water is denser than air an conducts sound waves very efficiently.
