DWARF Cows: Are they the answer to farmers' climate change problems?

Free World Class Education

The dwarf cows are able to withstand the extreme heat in India.

Summer months bring an intense heat to farmlands and drought stricken parts of the world. The heat from the sun can damage not only crops that need regular water supply, but will also cause sickness, dehydration and death to farm animals.

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Farmers and animal raisers all over India are faced with these problems. As soon as the summer heat and the sudden rise in temperature come in, animals, particularly cows, start to get sick and produce less milk; they also start to work poorly on the farms, as their health begins to deteriorate.

The cows become so weak they won't even pass for being sold for meat. What these Indian farmers need are better and healthier breeds of animals, specifically cows, to help them last through the months when the temperatures are high.

Scientists have recently discovered two variations of dwarf or miniature cows, which have been declared really great at being able to tolerate extreme changes in temperatures. They are known to be carriers of what is called the "thermometer genes," which enable them to adapt to high temperatures or intense heat without faltering.

Researchers from the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and the local government's Animal Husbandry Department, recommend the utilization of two dwarf cow species, known as the Vechur and the Kasaragod cattle varieties, for their high adaptability to heat and other cattle related diseases.

These two variations or species of cattle are believed to be the solution to problems that most farmers and cattle raisers in India have been enduring for many years. As a matter of fact, scientists and researchers are strongly considering the possibility of introducing these dwarf cows to the rest of the world for their capability to survive, despite the fast evolving climate change.
