Baby Chasmosaurus skeleton is unearthed in Canada; only lived to be three years old

Yup yup yup. That's what the adorable animated dinosaurs said in the animated classic "The Land Before Time." In actuality, the word "cute" and "Dinosaurs" don't appear in close proximity to each other. After all, the fearsome thunder lizards of prehistory are supposed to be aggressive, mean and defiant. But that may all change after a recent excavation in Canada -

The Chasmosaurine is a distant cousin of the more famous Triceratops.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The remains are of a baby horned dinosaur called a Chasmosaurine has been uncovered in Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada. The breed is a distant cousin of the more famous Triceratops.

Discovered by Professor Phil Currie of the University of Alberta, the boffin offered his insights on dinosaurs: "The big ones just preserve better. They don't get eaten, they don't get destroyed by animals. You always hope that you're going to find something small and that it will turn out to be a dinosaur."

Professor Currie and his colleagues estimate that their baby dinosaur was about three years old when it died.

The remains are over 1.5 meters in length, but would have been five meters long and heavier than an Indian elephant had it reached adulthood.

An investigation of the surrounding soil suggested that the dinosaur's final resting place was watery. The poor pipsqueak probably drowned.

"I think it may have just gotten trapped out of its league in terms of water current," Professor Currie says.

Chasmosaurus is a genus of ceratopsid dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Period of North America. Its name means "opening lizard," referring to the large openings in its frill. With a length of 13 to 16 feet and a weight of 2.2 tons, Chasmosaurus was a ceratopsian of average size. Like all ceratopsians, it was purely herbivorous. It was initially to be called Protorosaurus, but this name had been previously published for another animal. All specimens of Chasmosaurus were collected from the Dinosaur Park Formation of the Dinosaur Provincial Park of Alberta, Canada.
