Murphy most famous for work with group Bauhaus, song 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'

In his work with the Goth-rock band Bauhaus, lead singer pewter Murphy would croon about various dark, troubling subjects. Ghosts, goblins, the dark recesses of the imagination were all grist for Murphy's mill. His band is probably best known for the death disco classic, "Bela Lugosi's Dead." It seems that Murphy had a few dark, troubling personal issues as well. He's been arrested for methamphetamine possession after a police chase in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic online) - The British singer reportedly rear-ended a Mercedes in Glendale, California, injuring the driver this past weekend. Murphy then fled to Los Angeles, according to local newspaper reports.

An eyewitness and concerned citizen in a pickup truck reportedly followed Murphy's Subaru from the scene, blocking him on his way into the city until police arrived.

"He was afraid [Murphy] would kill someone with his driving," authorities told the newspaper.

Murphy appeared confused and disoriented, but denied drinking any alcohol that day. The police then found a bag of what appeared to be methamphetamine in the back of the patrol car where he had been detained. Again, Murphy denied that it belonged to him, while officers said that they believed he was actually trying to discard the bag in the car.

Murphy has since been arrested for suspicion of causing injuries while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony hit-and-run and possessing methamphetamines. Officers set bail at half a million dollars over concerns that Murphy, who is from England and lives in Turkey, could be a flight risk.

Murphy has an upcoming tour, which kicks off next month in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Bauhaus. "Peter Murphy Celebrates 35 Years of Bauhaus" is scheduled to hit nearly 50 cities in North American and Europe through July. It's not yet known if this incident will affect his tour.
