Sometimes, a motion picture with everything - giant robots, giant monsters, crazy mad special effects, steadfast heroes, 3-D and explosions - means little at the box office. Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" was beat out by the sequels "Despicable Me 2" and Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2," which translated into a major disappointment for Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures.
Marking director del Toro's first big-budget tentpole, "Pacific Rim" pits giant robots against alien monsters and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "Pacific Rim" grossed a scant $38.3 million, a frail number considering the movie's production budget of at least $190 million.
Seeing as Legendary footed most of the bill, with distribution and marketing partner Warner Bros. putting up a minority stake, "Pacific Rim" opened in 38 markets overseas. The 3-D version took in $53 million for a worldwide total of $91 million. Performing strong in Asia, Russia and Mexico, "Pacific Rim" was soft elsewhere.
Marking director del Toro's first big-budget tentpole, "Pacific Rim" pits giant robots against alien monsters and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. Del Toro had previously enjoyed success with the "Hellboy" series, as well as the critically acclaimed "Pan's Labyrinth."
"Pacific Rim" got off to a better-than-expected start Thursday night and Friday. However, once "fan-boy" traffic started tapering off late Friday, the movie took a dip. Mirroring strong reviews, "Pacific Rim" received an A- CinemaScore.
The animated hit "Despicable 2"stayed at No. 1 in its second weekend, grossing $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million, earning $243.2 million at the foreign box office, sure to overtake the entire run of "Despicable Me" this week.
Sony's "Grown Ups 2" opened to a stellar $42.5 million domestically. This comes as a Godsend for Adam Sandler, who has recently seen a long string of box office disappointments.
In spite of negative reviews, "Grown Ups 2" received a B- CinemaScore, same as the 2010 original. Costing a relatively modest $80 million to produce, the sequel reteams Sandler with Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph and Maria Bello.
Fox's Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy comedy "The Heat" placed No. 4 in its third outing, jumping the $100 million mark and ending the weekend with a North American cumulative of $112.4 million.
"The Lone Ranger," tumbled to fifth place, in a steep 61 percent tumble to $11.1 million in its second weekend for a tepid domestic cumulative of $77.1 million.
The Top 10 at the box office last weekend was:
1. "Despicable Me 2"
2. "Grown Ups 2"
3. "Pacific Rim"
4. "The Heat"
5. "The Lone Ranger"
6. "Monsters University"
7. "World War Z"
8. "White House Down"
9. "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain"
10. "Man of Steel"
