Determined teen gets job after proving to employer he would walk 10 miles in snow for interview
Teen's new place of employment sees its business double as a result
Nineteen-year-old Jhaqueil Reagan had been unemployed for four months. Without a car, he would have to walk 10 miles in the snow and slush in Indianapolis for a job interview. A restaurant owner was very impressed by Reagan's tenacity, and offered him a job at his place of business. It was a win-win situation as people have come streaming into the restaurant after hearing about the story.
Nineteen-year-old Jhaqueil Reagan had been unemployed for four months. Without a car, he would have to walk 10 miles in the snow and slush in Indianapolis for a job interview.
It all began when Reagan stopped at Bouvier's restaurant to ask how much further his destination was three miles into his trek. Having set off early that morning to another part of the city for a 1 p.m., Reagan had no money for wither bus or cab fare.
"If I say I am going to be somewhere, I am going to be there," Reagan told reporters.
Co-owner Art Bouvier told Reagan he was still six or seven miles away when he stopped at his restaurant. Reagan kept walking, but 15 minutes later, Bouvier spotted him from his car and offered him a lift. "I picked him up because he was legitimately walking another seven miles in the slush," Bouvier told reporters.
Bouvier drove Reagan to his job interview, but he said he knew immediately he wanted to hire him for himself, as he figured anyone willing to walk 10 miles for a job must be worth it.
"My motives were purely selfish, he just looked like a good candidate for employment," Bouvier said, who opened the New Orleans-style restaurant with his wife.
Reagan stayed at a friend's house after the interview so he didn't have to make the long walk home.
"It went OK, it was just another interview," he said. "They didn't look too enthusiastic about anything. I kept an open mind and tried to make a good impression."
Reagan was offered an entry-level job at Papa Roux that night, 20 percent above the $7.25 per hour minimum wage in Indiana.
He has started his new job Monday, working as a busboy and server among other duties. He says he is just happy to be making some money.
"It's going well, this week I am learning the basics of everything, I am basically training," Reagan said.
