Disgraced Cardinal Mahony to help pick next pope
Next pope will have to deal with Mahony and his ilk.
Cardinal Mahony of the Los Angeles Archdiocese is back at work, just a week after being relieved of all public duties for his role in the child-abuse sex scandal. Archbishop Gomez relieved him after it was revealed that he personally tried to cover up the allegations of abuse and shielded offending priests.
Cardinal Mahony will be traveling to Rome to elect the new pope.
Mahony praised Benedict, calling him "extraordinary" and saying that he looks forward to traveling to Rome. He posted, "I look forward to traveling to Rome soon to help thank Pope Benedict XVI for his gifted service to the Church, and to participate in the Conclave to elect his successor."
Mahony was soundly denounced by Archbishop Gomez saying "Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties."
However, it was clarified shortly afterwards that Mahony remained "in good standing" and that his powers as a cardinal remained.
In fact, Mahony may have no choice in the affair, as all Cardinals, under the age of 80, are actually required to vote.
For now, it appears the Cardinal will be going to Rome in a couple weeks and will join another 10 cardinals from the U.S. He should vote carefully. Whoever is the next pope is, he will be responsible for dealing with Mahony and those who have perpetrated and facilitated evil and abuse throughout the Church.

what we need now is not who votes.
but that God should give us a pope
who wud lid us 2 salvation
My heart and prayers go out to all the clergy who have to deal with the critical comments to come . What of the fall away catholics, this only strenghtens there determination to stay apart from the church. Those who want to join the faith, but now have doubts. Why is it that leaders on all levels of religion and government are never held to standards of the rest of us, let alone a higher standard. Holy Spirit give our leadership guidiance in this matter. The Bleesed Mother tells us to pray for our priest, and I do, for they are choosen by Jesus. Jesus I ask that this not weaken your church further.
I'am sure Mahony followed the Church wide practice and standard on how it handled the problem with some Priest his mistake was leaving a paper trail. I don't blame him one bit for thinking he's being hung out to dry when he knows he handled the problem the way it's been taken care of for years before he took the top job,
This is so extremely discouraging. What kind of nonsene is it to say he's been stripped of all administrative and public duties, and then to say that he's in "good standing"? Isn't that a contradiction? And why can he still function as a cardinal? This is disgusting. I can't begin to imagine how the victims feel about this. I'd be wiling to bet most - if not all - of them are no longer in the Church. How do you take the bishops - even the Pope - seriously when something like this happens? All the talk about making things right after the scandal seems to be just that - talk. Who, after all, besides the victims and a couple of priests, has paid anything for this?
This man is a false shepherd, who pastured himself on his sheep. He has no business even retaining his position, much less choosing the new Holy Father. Let this man Mr. Mahoney follow the example of the Pontif he praises... let him demonstrate a true heart of repentence and retire to a monastery for the rest of his life, and hopefully through prayer and self denial make some reparation for the edamage he willingly did in the cover up. The fact that he's instead clinging to title and honor demnstrates that this man does NOT have the heart of a servant.
Bill sch This is not a good excuse to leave the Church at all! The Catholic Church has been through much worse even bad popes but the teachings have always remained great and what God intended. And this cardinal is but one vote so its not like he has much power and what if the next pope is not voted on by him? And just because Cardinal Mahony did wrong before does not mean he will again. Are clergy now in this present age not allowed to repent and change? are they immune to sin and the Devil? We are all sinners after all.
Almost all Catholic Clergy are good honest men and are against sexual abuse including the Pope and the last Pope and im sure the future Pope.
But here is my question Bill sch are you or all those other people going to stop sending your kids to school? because their is much more sexual abuse in schools. And matter fact their is much more sexual abuse in all institutions including religious ones than the Catholic Church. The problem is the Catholic Church is more publicized because the media is heavily AntiCatholic! Yes it would be awesome if the clergy did no wrong and were perfect but that is not the world we live in. But abandoning Christ and abandoning his Holy Church which he created and which he said will not be destroyed will fix nothing instead this kind of action is falling into the devils trap. We should help make the Church better even if our only means is prayer. We should not run away from this or turn to evil.
How is this "cardinal" still considered "in good standing?" And,if you have been stripped of your duties/titles/etc, how are you still able to play a part in the election of the next Pope?
This is straight up wrong. Mahoney should be kicked out of the church.
ARE YOU KIDDING BILL SCH????? ARE YOU FOR REAL?????
>
PAUL H. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!
If his voice is heard in the election of the new pope, the new pope will be tainted by the atrocities committed by this man. Forgiveness is all well and good, but I do not think he has "paid" for his sins. And rewarding him by sending him to the Vatican to vote is just plain wrong.
