Officials criticize food benefits for Sandy victims

Bloomberg and others want to see more done.

City officials are criticizing the Wednesday deadline for area residents to qualify for SNAP benefits.

BROOKLYN, NY (Catholic Online) - Officials say the program should do more to help residents. Currently, residents living in 12 zip codes who were also impacted by Superstorm Sandy are eligible to apply for benefits.

However, to obtain those benefits, they must apply in person, by Wednesday in downtown Brooklyn or New Dorp on Staten Island.

Officials including Mayor Bloomberg, say the deadline should be extended and more places for people to apply should be made available. They also say the program should do more outreach to make people aware of their eligibility.

As of Friday, there was no word that any of these requests would be honored.
