Two dead, 11 hurt in Empire State shooting spree
This is the third mass shooting in the US this summer.
Two are dead, including the perpetrator, following a mass shooting outside the Empire State Building, according to the New York Police Department. At least 9 others were wounded and taken to the hospital in various conditions.
An image posted by a bystander, shows the apparent victim who police say was fatally struck three times.
After shooting his coworker, witnesses say Johnson started to leave the scene, and was followed by a construction worker who alerted officers. Police then attempted to apprehend Johnson, but he shot at them prompting them to return fire, which killed him.
The shooting took place on the sidewalk in front of the iconic building at 9 a.m. just as office workers are tourists were crowding the area. Tourists took pictures of the scene as police asked them to stay back and allow them room to work with first responders.
Many people say they were shaken by the incident, but calm has returned to the area as police managed to block off the area and get the victims to area hospitals.
This is the latest mass shooting in a string of several that have occurred throughout the summer.
UPDATE: Mayor Bloomberg says some of the victims may have been accidentally shot by police.
UPDATE: The reports that 11 were hurt have been revised to 9.

Only the Lord Christ can lead us, teach us, and save us through respect, peace and rightchessness. Sorry, but it starts with me, you, we and they. It begins from our innerself via healthy understanding, soul seaching, and mind to heart coordination. Everyone is to be included in this pool of the Lord's peaceful thought. That everyone may carry on the light of Jesus Christ - Amen! We may go on and on; blaming violence on the police, government, and civilians. We can fake it. We can dice it. And we can slice it. But it all comes back to the Almighty's example, while walking among us, as a Holy man over 2000 years ago and today! Oh well, we just may never get it. Many renown prophets, saints, leaders of the church, and civil examples (Ghandi, Martin L.K., Mother Theresa, and few others) have got it.
Only God can lead us, teach us and save us when we allow Him. It's tough though.
Chicago ----365 murders so far this year and in the relatively small city of Stockton, CA 43, at last count. Just how many people are killed in the US in a yr.? How many murders and lives have been lost to senseless violence in our country so far this year? And what makes some newsworthy and others not? The saddest in my town (Sacramento CA) happened on the 4th of July this year when a 3 yr old boy was killed in the car he was riding in with his mother and father, coming home from the fireworks. Shot with a bullet meant for his dad by rival gang members. The shooter himself 15 yrs old. That little one never made national headlines, such a senseless loss of one so innocent.
Perhaps whats most banal about the shoot out is that initially bystanders thought it was a celebrity sighting meanwhile in the immediate vicinity there were billboards of action heroes brandishing guns. Is it any wonder that the common man is now turning to extreme violence either as a way to assert his independence, his individuality, to settle scores or maybe just to get his own 15 minutes of fame?
