San Fernando LE - High school attempts to go beyond teaching to the test

A San Fernando high school is trying to go beyond teaching just the books.

There has been a continuing debate in education between linking a teacher's job security to their student's overall academic performance.

Questions are asked every day to get past a number of challenges.

SAN FERNANDO, CA (Catholic Online) - Many teachers are complaining that the stress on measuring their performance based off of their student performance creates an environment that exiles creative and challenging lesson plans, instead to "teach to the test."

Some, however, are struggling against the trend, saying that it can cause long-term problems if students graduate without learning comprehensive reading and critical thinking skills alike.

A program called Humanitas at Grant High School, located in the San Fernando Valley, is adopting an approach to teaching that seems to be working, though it has its challenges.

Teachers are confronting the challenges that have been laid out. Some of these include questioning how to reach students who have never read, how to assign work with no textbooks, how to get the parents involvement, and how to get the necessary resources. These questions are asked every day as the Humanitas program attempts to go beyond "teaching to the test."
